Flammable Finishes Application Guide, 2012 Edition

The Flammable Finishes Application Guide, based on the 2012 International Fire Code (IFC), was developed to assist code officials in understanding the code provisions in IFC Chapter 24. The text presents the basis for the IFC requirements for using flammable and combustible liquids and combustible dusts for painting and coating of materials.

The Flammable Finishes Application Guide is intended to be used by code officials, design professionals, plans examiners and inspectors involved with any project where flammable and combustible liquids or combustible dusts are used to provide a surface finish. The text introduces the reader to the hazards of spray finishing, powder coating, rigid thermoplastics and dip tank operations. Module 2 explains the numerous requirements for the protection of these operations. The remaining modules address the IFC, International Mechanical Code (IMC) and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements for the various processes.

A key element of this application guide is that it extensively addresses the requirements of the IMC. Mechanical ventilation systems for flammable finishing activities are classified as hazardous exhaust systems. This text reviews the requirements for these systems, including required supply and exhaust air rates, duct construction, and required clearances.
