The Tiny House—Building It Right: From the Publisher of the Building Codes was developed to address the need for an illustrated text explaining provisions of the 2024 International Residential Code® (IRC®) related to the construction of tiny houses. Special emphasis is placed on IRC Appendix BB, Tiny Houses, which defines a tiny house and provides relaxed requirements related to ceiling heights, lofts (typically used for sleeping or storage), the means for accessing and egressing the loft, lowered guard heights and emergency escape through roof windows. These alternatives accommodate components in a much smaller area than would otherwise be allowed. The text is presented and organized in a user-friendly manner with an emphasis on technical accuracy and clear noncode language.

Anyone involved in the design, construction, or inspection of tiny houses will benefit from this book. Both beginning and experienced inspectors, contractors, home builders, architects, designers, home inspectors, do-it-yourselfers, and students of construction technology and design will gain a fundamental understanding for practical application of the frequently used provisions of the 2024 edition of the IRC as they apply to tiny houses.

This book does not intend to cover all provisions of the IRC or all of the accepted materials and methods of construction for tiny houses. Focusing in some detail on the most common conventional construction provisions affords an opportunity to fully understand the most important concepts without exploring every variable and alternative. This is not to say that information not covered is any less important or valid. This book is best used as a companion to the IRC, which should be referenced for more complete information.

The Tiny House—Building It Right: From the Publisher of the Building Codes features full-color illustrations to assist the reader in visualizing the application of the code requirements. Simplified tables and highlights of particularly useful information also aid in understanding the provisions and determining code compliance. References to the applicable sections of the 2024 edition of the IRC are placed in brackets at the end of paragraphs to assist the reader in locating the corresponding code language and related topics in the code.
