Frame of Reference: Steel Moment Frames Explained
This web seminar will discuss the structural design and detailing requirements for ordinary and special steel moment frames specified under the provisions of the 2018 IBC, ASCE 7-16, AISC 360-16, and AISC 341. Intermediate steel moment frames will only be addressed by explaining why they are not commonly used. The following topics will be presented:
- Seismic detailing requirements for steel moment frames that are commonly overlooked
- Examples illustrating the mixing of steel moment resisting frames with wood lateral-force resisting systems and compliance with seismic detailing requirements, even when wind load governs
- Performance of past design leading up to current design philosophy for steel moment frames
- Comparisons of design and detailing requirements for various steel moment frame systems
- Background on the exceptions for increased height of ordinary steel moment frames
- Challenges when using steel moment frames in wood construction
- Helpful reference documents for practicing engineers
