Out-of-Plane Design of Reinforced Masonry Bearing Walls
The out-of-plane design of reinforced masonry bearing walls for wind, seismic and soil loads using both the allowable stress and strength design procedures are covered. Differences between the methods are highlighted. The effect of recent code changes on the design of the walls are also covered. Time- and cost-saving tips are provided for designing walls, including avoiding iteration with strength design of walls loaded out-of-plane and consideration of deflection. The new moment magnifier procedure that was added to the 2013 TMS 402 Code are shown. Examples illustrating the principles as well as common mistakes are presented.
