The 2011 MSJC is referenced in the 2012 IBC, and the 2013 MSJC is referenced in the 2015 IBC. This web seminar covers the major changes from the 2011 to the 2013 MSJC code. Some of the changes that are discussed include the change in the unit strength table for CMU masonry and changes in the modulus of rupture values. New provisions in the code are discussed including the moment magnification method and a partially grouted shear wall factor. The impact of the changes on masonry design is presented.

Richard Bennett, Ph.D, P.E. is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Tennessee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of The Masonry Society Journal and a Fellow of The Masonry Society. He is a member of ASTM C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry, and ASTM C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. Dr. Bennett has been very active in the Masonry Standards Joint Committee which writes the Building Code for Masonry Structures. He has chaired the Flexural, Axial Loads, and Shear subcommittee and served as the vice-chair of the 2013 MSJC Committee. Dr. Bennett is currently the chair of the main committee developing the 2016 code. He has been appointed as chair of the main committee for the next code cycle, which will develop the 2022 provisions.
