Recent code changes have impacted the design and detailing of midrise and highrise concrete buildings in seismic regions. This webinars presents case studies of concrete buildings designed using ASCE 7-10, ASCE 7-16 and ASC7-22 with companion ACI 318 Codes. In the case studies, building lateral loads will be compared and impact on the lateral systems illustrated. In addition, solutions to mitigate some of the issues facing engineers designing concrete buildings are discussed. Finally, the importance of detailing and constructability are illustrated through construction photos and videos.

Joe Ferzli, P.E., S.E., is a Senior Principal at Cary Kopczynski & Company (CKC). He is a professional and structural engineer with more than twenty-two years’ experience in high-rise mixed-use buildings throughout the United States and overseas.
Mr. Ferzli has been involved in the implementation of cost effective concrete structural systems for high-rise buildings. He is an expert in the design of concrete towers in high seismic and wind regions. His representative experience includes performance-based design of high-rise buildings, concrete and hybrid lateral system analysis, high strength materials, as well as post-tensioned concrete in building applications. Additionally, Mr. Ferzli has been involved in the application of innovative concrete materials such as the first use of high-performance fiber reinforced concrete coupling beam in North America. Mr. Ferzli is the President of the American Concrete Institute`s Washington Chapter. He is a voting member of ACI Committee 374 on Performance-Based Seismic Design of Concrete Buildings, 318T Committee on post-tensioned concrete, and ASCE 7 concrete subcommittee. He was a member of the BSSC IT4 committee on investigating concrete shear walls. He was awarded two Presidents Awards for his outstanding leadership and service by the Structural Engineer Association of Washington.
