Rarely are communities fully prepared when responding to disaster events. In the case of code officials, a lack of understanding of the roles and responsibilities they take on in the wake of a disaster will significantly impact a community’s ability to recover. Namely, when basic public safety responsibilities are not addressed in a timely fashion such as Initial Damage Assessments, the sharing of public information, Post-disaster Building Safety Evaluations, and Substantial Damage Estimates, communities and their residents can be harmed. This training session begins by reviewing the various phases of a disaster, emergency management basics, and the post-disaster roles and responsibilities typically assigned to code officials in the wake of disasters. This training then discusses how to identify and request resources needed after a disaster along with the basics of Mutual Aid.
