ICC 1150-2026 Standard for Automated Construction Technology for 3D Printing Walls
This standard establishes minimum requirements for the materials, qualification, inspection, and structural design of 3D printed walls and their connections constructed using 3D Automated Construction Technology (3D-ACT). It applies to interior and exterior wall systems produced with proprietary or non-proprietary cementitious materials and is intended to align with the intent and performance objectives of applicable model building codes.
The standard covers load-bearing, non-load-bearing, and shear walls in one-story and multi-story structures, constructed with or without conventional reinforcement. Wall systems formed through layered extrusion, including single-shell, multi-shell, and reinforced core configurations are addressed, along with systems incorporating conventional concrete or grout infill. Provisions account for the unique characteristics of layered construction, including interlayer bonding, load transfer, and structural continuity.
In addition, the standard establishes requirements for material qualification, structural design under gravity, wind, and limited seismic loading, reinforcement detailing, and construction quality assurance. By referencing recognized testing methods and design standards, it provides a consistent framework for the safe and reliable use of 3D printed wall systems while allowing flexibility for innovation where equivalent performance is demonstrated.
Includes information on the following:
- Material specifications for cementitious constituents, aggregates, admixtures, fibers, and water
- Requirements for batching, mixing, curing, and material testing
- Laboratory qualification procedures for fresh properties, strength, durability, and fire performance (where applicable)
- Structural design criteria for gravity, wind, and seismic loads (Seismic Design Categories A and B)
- Design provisions addressing axial, flexural, shear, bearing, and combined loading conditions
- Requirements for interlayer bonding, interbead shear resistance, and effective structural contact
- Reinforcement detailing, including vertical and horizontal reinforcement, bond beams, headers, and detailing at openings and intersections
- Connection requirements between walls, foundations, floors, and roof systems
