Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental or cognitive disabilities may be at increased risk of elopement, creating unique safety and supervision challenges within educational environments. At the same time, classroom doors and egress systems must comply with life safety provisions of the International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Code (IFC). This course examines the code requirements governing door locking arrangements in special education and autistic learning environments, with a focus on balancing occupant safety, security, and code compliance. Participants will explore applicable IBC and IFC provisions, occupancy classifications, means of egress requirements, and approved locking and delayed-egress systems. Through real-world examples and case studies, attendees will gain a practical understanding of how to address elopement concerns while maintaining compliance with adopted building and fire codes.
