This 90-minute advanced course explores how mechanical systems and lighting strategies shape energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and sustainability in schools, universities, and institutional facilities. Participants will examine the integration of HVAC design, ventilation standards, and lighting technologies within the framework of the model Energy Conservation Code. The course emphasizes practical design considerations unique to educational and institutional environments, such as high occupancy, variable schedules, and indoor air quality requirements.
More Information
Objectives
  • Analyze construction submittal documents to demonstrate energy code compliance for educational and institutional facilities and identify key mechanical and lighting design factors that influence efficiency.
  • Apply HVAC and ventilation strategies aligned with the model IMC and IECC provisions to optimize indoor air quality and occupant comfort in high-density spaces while demonstrating energy efficient equipment, controls and duct design.
  • Evaluate lighting technologies and controls (LED, daylighting, occupancy sensors, monitoring systems) for compliance with the model energy code in enhanced learning environments – providing energy-reduction strategies that support code compliance.
  • Review the role of inspection and verification by discussing innovative approaches and developing best practices that balance mechanical and lighting efficiency, sustainability goals, and operational needs in institutional settings.
