Fan Energy Index (FEI) is a metric that considers complete fan systems (fan, motor, drive), and is required by the U.S. Department of Energy for representing fan efficiency for most types of commercial and industrial fans. FEI has been used in ASHRAE 90.1 since the 2019 edition, and the IECC since the 2022 edition. This Webinar will describe the FEI-based fan efficiency provisions in model energy codes and instruct how to find FEI ratings for fans and specify FEI in project documents.

Objectives
  • Discuss how to the Fan Energy Index (FEI) metric represents energy performance for a fan system (fan, motor, drive).
  • Explain how to determine and specify an FEI rating for a constant speed and variable speed fan application.
  • Outline how FEI is codified in model and state energy codes and in federal regulations.
  • Describe where to find FEI-rated fans, including those that are tested by third-party laboratories.
