Extending fire sprinkler systems to protect balconies of residential buildings can provide exposure protection, tradeoffs, and life safety. However, not all codes, such as the International Building Code and International Residential Code for residential buildings have the same requirements for balcony sprinklers. NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, and NFPA 13D differ on how balcony protection, if required, are applied to residential and other occupancy balconies. As more mixed-use buildings and mixed-sprinkler standards are being applied, this seminar looks across the model codes and installation standards to provide clarity to the subject. This seminar is important for the fire sprinkler industry, architectural community, and for code officials with the short history of balcony sprinklers, detailed discussion, and updates in the 2021 model codes as well as the 2022 NFPA sprinkler standards.
