This current accessibility requirements as based on unassisted use and access to facilities. There is concern that as people age, they may no longer have the strength or stability to toilet and bath without assistance. This is the most prevalent in assisted living facilities, nursing homes and rehabilitation hospitals. This presentation will review the study that looked at assisted transfer from the viewpoint of both residents and care givers. We will also review the options for assisted toileting and bathing developed for the International Building Code and ICC A117.1 Accessibility standard. Families out for an event or traveling together may have members that need assistance in toileting. We will also discuss the options for family/companion toilet rooms and the new criteria for adult changing stations. How these criteria will meet or exceed federal requirements will also be discussed.
