A Structural Engineers Overview of Fire Protection for Wood Construction
Fire protection is typically beyond the scope of the Structural Engineer but knowledge of fire protection will aid in understanding the architectural challenges with fire protection that can affect the structure such as determining the type of construction or the structural material of choice. This presentation includes building code fire resistance requirements for wood construction and the various methods to meet the fire resistance requirements including design examples that are specific to structural elements. Also, included are new mass timber requirements in the 2021 IBC.
