The first day will focus on the essential code provisions that pertain to the residential construction and reference the 2015 International Residential Code® (IRC®), 2015 International Plumbing Code® (IPC®), the 2015 International Mechanical Code® (IMC®), 2015 International Fuel Gas Code® (IFGC®) as well as electrical provisions that are associated with each of these areas. Day two and three will focus on the process for inspecting residential buildings referencing the 2015 International Residential Code®(IRC®). Day four will focus on the process for performing an inspection of the plumbing system and reference the 2015 International Plumbing Code® (IPC®) and the residential plumbing provisions of the 2015 International Residential Code® (IRC®). Day five will focus on the process for performing an inspection of the mechanical system referring to the residential provisions of the 2015 International Mechanical Code® (IMC®) and the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code® (IECC®).

Upon completion, participants will be better able to:

  • Determine essential residential code provisions that pertain to residential inspection.
  • Utilize the mechanical, fuel gas, plumbing and electrical provisions of the 2015 IRC in the performance of their jobs.
  • Identify and apply key code sections.
  • Ensure the safety and proper construction of residential structures.
  • Explain the purpose of building foundation and final inspections.
  • Describe the building inspection process in a step-by-step fashion.
  • Determine if a given one- or two-family dwelling complies with the 2015 IRC.
  • Describe the plumbing inspection process in a step-by-step fashion.
  • Describe the mechanical inspection process in a step-by-step fashion.
  • Determine if a given residential dwelling complies with Chapters 25 through 33 of the 2015 International Residential Code® (IRC®).
  • Locate and apply plumbing code requirements.
  • Locate and apply mechanical code requirements.
  • Complete inspection checklists.

Daily Schedule:

: 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.
Instruction: 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Cancellation Policy:

All cancellation requests must be received in writing in order to receive a refund. Refunds are subject to a processing fee of $75*. There will be NO REFUNDS for cancellations received less than two calendar weeks prior to the scheduled training event.

International Code Council reserves the right to cancel any training event having insufficient registrations. If that occurs, all prepaid fees will be refunded in full. International Code Council cannot be responsible for any losses resulting from the cancellation of a training event.

Gerald C. Flanik is an ICC-Certified Master Code Professional (MCP) holding over 30 various certifications and licenses. He is a LEED Accredited Professional, Certified Floodplain Manager and is licensed by the State of Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal for fire protection systems. Throughout his career, Jerry has been responsible for a diverse array of design build projects. Mr. Flanik serves as the Chief Building Official for the County of Lake, State of Ohio Building Department encompassing 22 jurisdictions and is an adjunct faculty instructor at Lakeland College in the Civil and Electrical Engineering Departments. Gerald holds degrees in Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology and is currently working towards a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cleveland State University.

Jerry teaches multi-disciplinary courses for Lakeland College, International Code Council, Ohio Building Officials Association and the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards for continuing education of code enforcement personnel. He teaches structural and non-structural IBC, all IRC, IMC, IFGC, IECC, IPC, Accessibility, Green Building, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), and administrative topics.

John is a Technical Advisor and Instructor for the International Code Council (ICC). A certified Master Code Professional and Certified Fire Marshal; he has forty (40) other certifications, including thirty-three (33) from the ICC. Having earned a B.S. in Engineering from the University of Delaware, he has also studied Architecture at Georgia Tech and completed courses in Emergency Management and Fire Prevention at the National Emergency Training Center. Formerly the Director of the Department of Permits and Inspections for Frederick County Maryland, he is an ICC Honorary Member, has served on the ICC- Evaluations Services (ICC-ES) Board of Directors, the ICC Code Correlating Committee, the Board of Directors for BOCA International, Inc., Maryland’s Governor’s Smart Code Strategy Group, Chaired the ICC Board for International Professional Standards and is an Honorary Member and Past President of the Maryland Building Officials Association. He currently teaches ICC administrative, building, residential, existing building, property maintenance, zoning, green building, wildland/urban interface, energy courses, and is a contract instructor at the Dept. of Homeland Security, United States Fire Administration, National Fire Academy, and Emmitsburg, MD. He received the ICC Educator of the Year award in 2010.
