If you are a code official or moving up through the ranks to become a code official, the Code Official Institute is a must-attend event. You will learn the necessary administrative and management skills to help you and your building department make your communities safer.

During this interactive institute, you will discuss on-the-job problems and brainstorm solutions with other attendees. Specific topics addressed include human resource management, financial management, ethics, increasing credibility of the Code Official and legal strategies. The instructor will also address new technologies that can help you more easily meet the needs of your community.

In addition to all that you will learn, this is also a great opportunity to network and share experiences with your peers.

Upon completion, participants will be better able to:

  • Describe techniques to manage building department finances
  • Describe techniques to successfully hire, manage, and maintain a staff in a building department
  • Discuss ethics and its practical application to Building Officials.
  • Determine their strengths and areas to improve as a Code Official.
  • Use effective Code administration and enforcement techniques to assist in executing the legal aspects of their job.

Cancellation Policy:

All cancellation requests must be received in writing in order to receive a refund. Refunds are subject to a processing fee of $75*. There will be NO REFUNDS for cancellations received less than two calendar weeks prior to the scheduled training event.

International Code Council reserves the right to cancel any training event having insufficient registrations. If that occurs, all prepaid fees will be refunded in full. International Code Council cannot be responsible for any losses resulting from the cancellation of a training event.

John is a Technical Advisor and Instructor for the International Code Council (ICC). A certified Master Code Professional and Certified Fire Marshal; he has forty (40) other certifications, including thirty-three (33) from the ICC. Having earned a B.S. in Engineering from the University of Delaware, he has also studied Architecture at Georgia Tech and completed courses in Emergency Management and Fire Prevention at the National Emergency Training Center. Formerly the Director of the Department of Permits and Inspections for Frederick County Maryland, he is an ICC Honorary Member, has served on the ICC- Evaluations Services (ICC-ES) Board of Directors, the ICC Code Correlating Committee, the Board of Directors for BOCA International, Inc., Maryland’s Governor’s Smart Code Strategy Group, Chaired the ICC Board for International Professional Standards and is an Honorary Member and Past President of the Maryland Building Officials Association. He currently teaches ICC administrative, building, residential, existing building, property maintenance, zoning, green building, wildland/urban interface, energy courses, and is a contract instructor at the Dept. of Homeland Security, United States Fire Administration, National Fire Academy, and Emmitsburg, MD. He received the ICC Educator of the Year award in 2010.

Clark County Director/Building Official‐Department of Development Services

Ron is the Building & Fire Official of Clark County Department of Building. Ron has published over 30 papers and articles on topics ranging from materials to quality control and conducted editorial review of the 1995 Portland Cement Association Inspector’s Manual. He is an experienced instructor and seminar speaker on a variety of topics at a local community college and for ICC. Ron is Past President of the ICC Board of Directors and has served as a local officer for the American Concrete Institute, American Society of Nondestructive Testing, American Welding Society, Geology Society of America, National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials, and the Southern Nevada chapter of ICC. He is also the current chairman of the Nevada Earthquake Safety Council and member of the Nevada Organization of  Officials. He was the 2012 recipient of the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award, recognized by the U.S. Congress for contributions to the building safety community, and received a U.S. Senate Commendation for his commitment to building safety, energy conservation and emergency response.
